چکیده

We present high resolution H41 hydrogen recombination line observations of the 1 2 (3 pc) region surrounding Sagittarius A (Sgr A ) at 92 GHz using the Millimeter Array at the Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) with an angular resolution of 7 3 and velocity resolution of 13 km s−1. New observations of H31 , H35 , H41 and H44 lines were obtained using the NRAO 12-m telescope, and their relative line strengths are interpreted in terms of various possible emission mechanisms. These NRAO 12-m measurements are the most extensive recombination line survey of this region to date. These OVRO data also represent the highest angular resolution and the highest sensitivity observations of Sgr A West in hydrogen recombination line and continuum emission at the millimeter (mm) wavelengths. Observations of HCO+(J = 1 0) transition at 89 GHz are obtained simultaneously with a 40% improved angular resolution and 4-15 times improved sensitivity over the previously published results, and the distribution and kinematics of the dense molecular gas in the circumnuclear disk (CND) are mapped and compared with those of the ionized gas. The line brightness ratios of the hydrogen recombination lines are consistent with purely spontaneous emission from Te 7000 K gas with ne 2 104 cm−3 near LTE condition. A virial analysis suggests that the most prominent molecular gas clumps in the CND have mean densities of order 107 cm−3, sufficient to withstand the tidal shear in the Galactic Center region. Therefore, these clumps may survive over several dynamical times, and the CND may be a dynamically stable structure. We estimate a total gas mass of about 3 105M for the CND. Our combined analysis of the new high resolution H41 and HCO+ images and our kinematic model demonstrates a widely spread physical and dynamical link between the molecular gas in the CND and the ionized gas, including along the eastern rim of the CND where a gap was previously suggested. A Model for the Strings of Η Carinae

We propose a model based on ionization shadows to explain the formation of the long and narrow strings of η Carinae. Five strings are known, all located along the symmetry axis outside the Homunculus. The model assumes that each string is formed in a shadow behind a dense clump near the symmetry axis. The surrounding gas is ionized first, becomes much hotter, and compresses the gas in the shado...

Recent X-ray and gamma-ray observations of the Galactic center region by the ASCA and CGRO/EGRET instruments show evidence of 2–10 keV and > 1 GeV continuum emission as well as 6.7 and 6.4 keV line emission from the inner 0.2 of the Galactic center. This region is also known to host a bright nonthermal radio continuum source Sgr A East and a dense molecular cloud M–0.02–0.07 known as the 50 km ...

Proper Motions of Ionized Gas at the Galactic Center : Evidence for Unbound Orbiting Gas

We present radio continuum observations of the spiral-shaped ionized feature (Sgr A West) within the inner pc of the Galactic center at three epochs spanning 1986 to 1995. The VLA A-configuration was used at λ2cm (resolution of 0. ′′ 1×0. ′′ 2). We detect proper motions of a number of features in the Northern and Eastern Arms of Sgr A West including the ionized gas associated with IRS 13 with V...

Characteristics of Diffuse X-ray Line Emission within 20 Pc of the Galactic Center

Over the last three years, the Galactic center region has been monitored with the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. Besides the X-ray emission from the target object, Sgr A*, diffuse X-ray emission was detected throughout most of the 17 × 17 field of view. With 11 Chandra observations through 2002 June, the total effective exposure reaches ∼590 ks, providing significant photon statistics on much of th...

Ion-Neutral Coupling in Solar Prominences

Interactions between ions and neutrals in a partially ionized plasma are important throughout heliophysics, including near the solar surface in prominences. Understanding how ionneutral coupling affects formation, support, structure, and dynamics of prominences will advance our physical understanding of magnetized systems involving a transition from a weakly ionized dense gas to a fully ionized...
